The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) lets UK citizens access health care that is available to EU citizens in the EU country they are visiting.

However, protection is limited and is not a replacement for travel insurance. 

EHIC does not cover private hospitals or treatment centres, trip cancellation or curtailment, or repatriation to the UK alongside many other additional travel insurance benefits.
